Hopi Black Dye Sunflower, a cultivar distinguished by its purple-black seeds renowned for their application in natural dye production. This traditional variety holds historical significance, with seeds carefully preserved and utilized by the Hopi Native Americans for dyeing cotton, wool, and various fibers, as well as in basketry. During harvesting, it is noteworthy that the seeds impart a distinctive purple stain to one's hands. Characterized by medium-to-large sunflower heads, this variety offers dual functionality, as the seeds are suitable for both natural dye extraction and as a nutritious food source. Additionally, Hopi Black Dye Sunflower exhibits robust growth, reaching heights of 7-8 feet.

Plant seeds directly in the garden after average last frost date when soil has warmed up. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 60-75°F. Succession plantings can be made every 1-2 weeks for continued harvest. Or, start seed indoors 3-5 weeks before transplanting into the garden. Transplant to the garden 1-2 weeks after your average last frost date. Sunflower is sensitive to transplant shock so carefully set in the garden.
