Lettuce
Lettuce makes it easy to grow fresh salads close to the kitchen, with looseleaf, butterhead, romaine, crisphead, oakleaf, and colorful specialty types for every kind of garden. Tender leaves can be harvested young or allowed to form fuller heads.
Sow in small batches through cool weather, keep the shallow roots evenly moist, and provide afternoon shade as temperatures rise. Frequent succession plantings create a steadier harvest than one large sowing.
