Blue Curled Scotch packs big nutrition on a compact plant—tight ruffles of deep blue‑green leaves that stay tender through frost and even snow. This 19th‑century Scottish type is rich in vitamins A, C, and K with that sweet, mineral bite kale lovers chase. Harvest outer leaves and it will keep pushing new growth for months. Sow in spring and again for fall; cold only improves flavor. If you garden small but eat greens big, this squat workhorse earns permanent space.

How to Grow

Plant seeds directly into the garden starting 4-6 weeks before average last frost date continuing until about that date. You can also start seeds indoors 5-7 weeks before transplanting. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 45-80 degrees. Kale is a cool season crop so avoid letting it mature in hot weather. High temperatures slow plant growth and make the leaves tough and bitter. Grow it in the spring, then again in the fall. Frost can improve the flavor of kale.
