About Our Seeds

Yes. Every seed we offer is non-GMO. Our seeds are also untreated and are not coated with synthetic fungicides or chemical seed treatments. They are simply good seed, packed and ready for the garden.

Yes. Our catalog is built around open-pollinated seeds, including many heirloom varieties. With proper isolation and seed saving, they can grow true to type year after year.

That means you can save seed from your best plants, sow it again the following season, and keep a trusted variety growing in your family garden.

Open-pollinated varieties are pollinated naturally and can generally grow true to type year after year when properly isolated.

Heirlooms are open-pollinated varieties with a longer history. They have been saved, shared, and passed down over generations, often for their flavor, beauty, regional character, or dependable garden performance.

Hybrid seeds are created by crossing two specific parent varieties to produce selected traits, such as disease resistance, uniformity, or higher yields. Seed saved from hybrid plants will not reliably grow true to the original variety, so new seed must be purchased each year for the same predictable results.

Bucktown Seed Company does not sell hybrid seed. Our catalog is focused on open-pollinated varieties, including many heirlooms that gardeners can save and grow again.

Many of the seeds we source are Certified Organic. Seeds grown here at Bucktown Seed Company are produced using Certified Naturally Grown practices.

Other varieties may come from growers who use regenerative, soil-building, low-input, or conventional growing methods. Growing and certification details are listed on each product page.

Germination & Growing

Yes. Every seed lot is tested by an independent third-party lab before packing to make sure it meets federal germination standards. Most lots exceed those minimums, and we retest seed as needed to help keep our inventory fresh and dependable.

Germination can still vary with planting depth, soil temperature, moisture, and storage, but we do our part to send out seed that is ready for the garden.

Start by checking the basics: soil temperature, planting depth, moisture, and light. Seeds may struggle when the soil is too cold, too wet, allowed to dry out, or when they are planted too deeply.

Growing conditions matter just as much as seed quality. Contact us if you are still having trouble, and include the variety, planting date, and growing conditions so we can help narrow down the cause.

Yes. Heat mats are especially helpful for warmth-loving seeds such as peppers, eggplants, and tomatoes. They help maintain a steady soil temperature and can improve germination speed and consistency.

Once seedlings emerge, remove the heat mat unless the crop still needs extra warmth.

Yes. The printed date is not an expiration date. Many seeds remain viable beyond that year when stored properly, though germination may gradually decline over time.

Keep unused seed cool, dark, and dry for the best shelf life.

Every crop has its own germination window. Radishes may emerge in just a few days, while peppers, parsley, and some flowers can take much longer.

Warmth, moisture, and planting depth all affect how quickly seedlings appear, so a slower start does not always mean the seed has failed.

Seed Storage & Saving

Keep seeds cool, dark, and dry. An airtight container stored away from heat and humidity works well for everyday storage.

For longer storage, seeds can be refrigerated in a sealed container with a moisture-absorbing packet. Let the container return to room temperature before opening so condensation does not form on the seeds.

Yes. Because our seeds are open-pollinated, seed can be saved and grown again when plants are properly isolated and allowed to mature fully.

Choose healthy plants that show the traits you want to carry forward. Some crops cross more easily than others, so isolation distance or hand-pollination may be needed to keep a variety true to type.

Seed life varies by crop and depends greatly on how it is stored. Some seeds remain viable for several years, while others lose germination more quickly.

The date printed on the packet is not an expiration date. Seeds kept cool, dark, and dry may continue to germinate well beyond that year, though germination can gradually decline over time.

No. The process depends on the crop, and seed must be fully mature before it is saved.

With dry-seeded crops such as beans, peas, lettuce, and many flowers, the seed is usually left on the plant until it becomes hard and dry. With fruiting crops, the fruit often needs to remain on the plant much longer than it would for eating. A cucumber picked crisp and green for the kitchen, for example, does not yet contain mature seed; for seed saving, it must become oversized, soft, and yellow or brown.

Tomatoes and cucumbers may also benefit from a short fermentation, while peppers, squash, and melons are cleaned and dried after the fruit reaches full maturity. Some crops are biennial and must grow through a second season before producing seed, and varieties that cross easily may require isolation or hand-pollination.
