Fordhook Giant has anchored kitchen gardens since the 1930s—broad, glossy green leaves and thick white ribs that stand heat, cold, and repeated harvests. Flavor is mild and earthy; stems sauté like celery while leaves cook like spinach. Packed with vitamins A and K, chard is a true cut‑and‑come‑again workhorse. Sow in spring and again in late summer for near year‑round greens, thinning small plants for tender salads. If you want one leafy crop that keeps giving while others sulk, Fordhook earns its keep.

Plant seeds directly into the garden starting 2-3 weeks before average last frost date when soil temperature is at least 50°f. successive plantings can be made throughout the summer. you can also start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before transplanting. optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 65-85 degrees. a spring planting can last all season long if well cared for. chard can be planted again in late summer about 6-8 weeks before average first frost date. swiss chard baby greens are a great addition to any salad, or mature leaves for cooking.
