Buttercrunch forms tight, crisp hearts wrapped in satiny outer leaves—sweet, crunchy, and slow to bolt. An AAS winner from 1963, it holds texture in heat better than many butterheads. Great for wraps and salads alike. Provide fertile, moist soil and sow in spring or late summer for best quality. Harvest whole heads or pick outer leaves. If you like lettuce with both crunch and flavor, Buttercrunch earns its name. Average 28,000 seeds/oz.

Plant seeds directly in the garden in early spring, starting about 4 weeks before your average last frost date or as soon as the soil can be worked. You can also start seeds indoors 2–4 weeks before transplanting. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 55–65°F. Lettuce seed germinates poorly in warm soil and may become dormant as soil temperatures rise above 75–80°F. Resume sowing in late summer for a fall harvest. Lettuce is cold tolerant and will withstand light to moderate frosts. For a steady harvest, make succession sowings every 1–2 weeks during cool weather. Keep plants evenly watered for best flavor and texture.
