Hopi Black Dye sunflower has been stewarded by the Hopi people for generations, its purple-black seeds used to dye cotton, wool, and basket fibers a deep plum tone. Plants reach 7–8 feet with sturdy stalks and medium to large heads, offering seed for dyeing or eating after bloom.

Beyond tradition, the variety still anchors a modern garden: tall enough for a living screen, tough in wind, and a magnet for finches and bees. If you like crops with a story and a purpose, this sunflower brings both beauty and cultural heritage to the patch.

Every order is packed with care by our small team in Pennsylvania and typically ships within 2–3 business days—often by the next business day. We ship throughout the United States using USPS and UPS.

Plant seeds directly in the garden after average last frost date when soil has warmed up. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 60-75°f. Succession plantings can be made every 1-2 weeks for continued harvest. Or, start seed indoors 3-5 weeks before transplanting into the garden. Transplant to the garden 1-2 weeks after your average last frost date. Sunflower is sensitive to transplant shock so carefully set in the garden.
