Moon and Stars watermelon wears a dark rind spattered with yellow “stars” and a single larger “moon”—a Missouri heirloom rediscovered in the 1980s. Inside is rosy red, juicy flesh with classic watermelon sweetness. Fruits are medium-large and vines vigorous. Watermelons provide lycopene and hydration; this one adds whimsy to the patch. Mulch to keep fruit clean and moisture steady, and harvest on the usual tendril/ground-spot cues. Save seed to keep the pattern going. If you garden for story as well as supper, Moon and Stars delivers both in one beautiful rind.

Direct seed 2 to 3 weeks after average last frost date and when daytime soil temperatures are near 70°f. Or, start watermelon seed indoors 3-4 weeks before your anticipated planting date. Set transplants in the garden 2 to 3 weeks after danger of frost has passed. Watermelon s
Eedlings are tender. Do not disturb roots when transplanting, and water thoroughly.
Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 70-90
°F
. Delay transplanting until your soil has thoroughly warmed up in the spring. Watermelons are a true warm season crop and can benefit from planting on black plastic and/or using row covers.
