The petite-seeded Sweet Lorane fava bean boasts remarkable productivity, carefully chosen for its delightful and sweet flavor. This dual-purpose crop is a fantastic option for nourishing both the soil and the gardener alike. Its resilience in colder temperatures makes it extremely winter hardy. With an excellent taste profile, Sweet Lorane is a versatile choice that is typically sown in autumn for cover cropping, and for optimal yields, it can also be spring-sown. Bred by Steve Solomon in the 1980s and further refined by Alan Adesse in more recent times. 22g ~ 50 seeds.

GROWING TIPS

Plant seeds directly in the garden starting 3-5 weeks before average last frost date or as soon as the soil can be worked. Favas can be planted usually at the same time as peas. In climates where winters remain above 10°F, can also be planted late-summer to early-fall. Pinching back the upper part of the plant as the initial pods emerge typically results in beans of higher quality that are more consistently uniform. For dried beans, harvest a few weeks after normal picking time when the pods are thick, well-filled and dry. Can also be used for cover cropping.
