Philadelphia White Box is a tidy, early radish bred in the late 1800s for urban gardeners in and around Philadelphia. Its round, white roots have crisp, mild flesh and are perfectly suited to window boxes, raised beds, and tight rows. Ready in about 25 days, it’s ideal for spring and fall sowings. Sow thickly, thin early, and keep moisture steady for the best flavor. Radishes provide vitamin C and aid digestion, while the greens cook up well in a hot pan. An old city favorite that still earns its spot in today’s small gardens.

How to Grow

Plant spring radish seeds directly in the garden starting 4-6 weeks before average last spring frost. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 50-65 degrees. Since they mature so quickly, spring radishes are often planted with carrots and parsnips, between slowly growing cole crops, or between small tomato and pepper plants. Plant every 2-3 weeks for a continued harvest until about 4 weeks after average last frost. Can be sown again in early fall. Plant winter radish varieties 6-8 weeks before average first frost.
