Spearmint delivers a bright, sweet-mint flavor with gentler menthol than peppermint—perfect for mojitos, iced tea, tzatziki, lamb, and fruit salads. Upright, spear-leafed stems are vigorous and spreading; it spreads quickly and may become invasive—grow in containers or give it a dedicated bed to keep it in bounds. Summer flower spikes feed bees and other beneficials. Snip young tips for the most tender leaves; they dry well and freeze beautifully. Long used as a calming, digestive tea and simple breath freshener. Keep it cut to stay lush and branching for an easy, steady supply from spring through frost—clean, refreshing, and indispensable in the kitchen.

How to Grow

Start seed indoors 6-8 weeks before transplanting into the garden. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 55-65°. Transplant to individual containers at first true leaves; move to the garden after frost danger, when plants are 3–4" tall. Or, plant seeds directly in the garden after your average last frost date. Pinch tops early for bushier growth. Spreads quickly and may become invasive—grow in containers to contain. Cut back to ground before winter for stronger regrowth the following year.
