Freckles is a speckled Austrian romaine from the 18th century—lime green leaves splashed with burgundy spots that look hand‑painted. The texture is crisp at the rib and tender toward the tip, with a sweet, slightly nutty bite that holds longer in heat than many lettuces. Harvest whole baby heads or pick outer leaves and let the core keep growing. Lettuce brings folate and vitamin K; this one brings dinner‑table conversation. Sow in cool weather, keep soil evenly moist, and give a little afternoon shade as summer approaches. Let a plant bolt and you’ll get a tower of spotted leaves plus seed to save for next season.

Plant seeds directly in the garden in early spring, starting about 4 weeks before your average last frost date or as soon as the soil can be worked. You can also start seeds indoors 2–4 weeks before transplanting. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 55–65°F. Lettuce seed germinates poorly in warm soil and may become dormant when soil temperatures rise much above 75–80°F. Resume sowing in late summer for a fall harvest. Lettuce is cold tolerant and will withstand light to moderate frosts. For a steady harvest, make succession sowings every 1–2 weeks during cool weather. Keep plants growing quickly with even moisture for the best flavor and texture.
