Lemongrass brings a clean, citrus snap to soups, curries, broths, marinades, and soothing teas. A heat-loving, clumping grass with blue-green blades, it thrives in full sun and well-drained soil and does especially well in containers. Harvest outer stalks once plants are established—use the tender white bases fresh or freeze for later, and dry the leaves for tea jars. In warm zones (9–11) it’s a perennial; elsewhere it’s grown as an annual or kept going by moving pots indoors before frost. Traditionally enjoyed as a calming, digestive tea, lemongrass offers bright flavor with a gentle, restorative lift—simple, aromatic, and hardworking in both kitchen and garden

Start seed indoors 8–10 weeks before transplanting into the garden. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 70–80°F. Transplant to the garden after all danger of frost when nights stay above 50°F. Or sow directly outdoors in warm climates after the average last frost date. Harvest leaves once plants are established snip outer blades for tea and cooking or pull full stalks when the bases thicken. A tropical clumping perennial (Zones 9–11) lemongrass rarely flowers in temperate gardens multiply by dividing clumps in the fall to pot up for overwintering indoors.
