Spacemaster 80 was bred for patios and tight beds—compact 2–3’ vines that still turn out 7–8” slicing cucumbers with thin skins and a clean, sweet crunch. It shines in raised beds and containers; trellis lightly or let it spill. Keep moisture even to prevent bitterness and pick at 6–8” for peak texture. Selected for container growth and dependable yields, it also brings helpful disease resistance (cucumber mosaic, scab, and noted tolerance to downy and powdery mildew). Released in 1980, it remains a small-space staple because it delivers real cucumbers, not compromises.

Plant seeds directly in the garden in the spring after the danger of frost has passed, roughly 1-2 weeks after the average last frost date and when daytime temps are near 70°f. Sow 5-6 seeds per hill and thin to 2-3 plants. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 65-80 degrees. For transplants, start seed indoors 3-4 weeks before transplanting into the garden. Transplant to the garden 2-3 weeks after your average last frost date
