Lemon basil hits with a clean citrus snap over classic basil sweetness—ideal for iced teas, pesto twists, grilled fish, and summer fruit salads. Plants stay compact (around 20–24 inches), branching well if you pinch early and often. This Southeast Asian type thrives in heat, good drainage, and regular moisture; stress makes leaves bitter. Harvest in the morning for peak essential oils and use fresh to keep the lemon note bright. Flower spikes draw bees, but let them open only after you’ve had your fill of leaves. Dry some for winter blends, and you’ll remember July every time you open the jar.

How to Grow

Plant seeds directly into the garden starting 1-2 weeks after average last frost date, when air temperature is above 65°f. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 65-80°f. Or, start seed indoors 3-5 weeks before transplanting into the garden. Transplant to the garden 1-2 weeks after your average last frost date. You can keep plants from bolting by pinching back their flower stalks.
