Bolivian Purple favas stand out with purple‑tinged flowers and pods, then dry to richly flavored beans great for soups and spreads. Plants love cool weather and add nitrogen to soil. Sow as soon as you can work ground, give light support, and pick young for fresh eating or let pods dry for storage. Protein, fiber, and garden fertility in one crop—with a little color flair thrown in.

Plant seeds directly in the garden starting 3-5 weeks before average last frost date or as soon as the soil can be worked. Favas can be planted usually at the same time as peas. In climates where winters remain above 10°f, can also be planted late-summer to early-fall. Pinching back the upper part of the plant as the initial pods emerge typically results in beans of higher quality that are more consistently uniform. For dried beans, harvest a few weeks after normal picking
time when the pods are thick, well-filled and dry. Can also be used for cover cropping.
