Catnip (Nepeta cataria) is famous for sending felines into bliss, but it’s also a soothing herb for humans—traditionally brewed for mild sleep and digestion support. Soft gray‑green leaves and whorls of pale flowers draw bees and beneficial insects. Hardy and drought tolerant, catnip can sprawl and reseed, so plant where a little wildness is okay or cut back after bloom. Dry stems for your cats or stuff toys with leaves; hang bundles for winter teas. If you share your garden with pets—and pollinators—catnip is a forgiving perennial that gives back in more ways than one.

Start seed indoors 6-8 weeks before transplanting into the garden. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 70-75 degrees. Transplant to the garden 1-2 weeks after your average last frost date. Or, plant seeds directly in the garden after average last frost date. Harvest after plants have become established. Allow leaves to fully dry after harvesting and store dried flowers and leaves in a cool, dry location.
