HEIRLOOM, ORGANIC.

Introducing the Fordhook Giant - Swiss Chard. This heirloom vegetable was introduced in 1934 by W. Atlee Burpee and Company and named after their famous Pennsylvania farm. Broad, dark green, savoyed leaves with white veins make this an attractive addition to your garden. The plants grow 24-28 inches tall with thick white 2.5 inch wide stalks. They are prolific, providing an abundance of greens throughout the season - even tolerating light frosts! Swiss chard is excellent for baby greens in a salad or cooked as a side dish. It's also good for poultry feed. 2g ~ 150 seeds.

Plant seeds directly into the garden starting 2-3 weeks before average last frost date when soil temperature is at least 50°F. Successive plantings can be made throughout the summer. You can also start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before transplanting. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 65-85 degrees. A spring planting can last all season long if well cared for. Chard can be planted again in late summer about 6-8 weeks before average first frost date. Swiss Chard baby greens are a great addition to any salad, or mature leaves for cooking.
