Tall Trailing nasturtiums spill in long, peppery trails of round leaves and jewel‑tone blooms—ideal for fences, baskets, or letting tumble from raised beds. Leaves and flowers are edible, adding a mustardy bite to salads, pestos, and pickles, and the green seeds can be brined as “poor man’s capers.” Nasturtiums act as trap crops, luring aphids away from brassicas. In folk use they’ve been noted for mild antimicrobial properties. Give them poorer soil for more flowers than leaves, regular picking, and a place to roam—they’ll earn their keep in beauty and function.

Plant seeds directly in the garden as soon as the soil can be worked, roughly 2 weeks before average last frost date. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 60-70°f. Thin seedlings to 6-12" after first true leaves appear. Or, start seed indoors 3-5 weeks before transplanting into the garden. Harden off plants prior to transplanting outside. Transplant to the garden 1-2 weeks after your average last frost date.

Up and Over

All the seeds I planted in part shade happily trailed up and over everything I gave them to climb. I wish I had given them more structure to trellis. My kids loved their "hairy" flowers!
Their flavor was strongly horse-radishy. A little too bitter to be a salad green.
The seeds planted in full sun sprouted, then died. Give them shade!

Thank you for trying our Tall Trailing Mix Nasturtium seeds, Rebekah! We're so happy to hear you enjoyed the flowers. :) They definitely grow best with sufficient structure and we're glad you found a way to make them work for your garden. Thanks for sharing your experience with us.
