Nantes Scarlet makes blunt‑tipped, coreless roots with crisp texture and balanced sweetness—ideal for snacking, juicing, and roasting. Bred in France in the 1800s, this type became the standard for market carrots. High in beta‑carotene and fiber, carrots are a lunchbox classic for a reason. Sow shallowly in loose soil, keep beds moist (germination is slow), and thin early for straight roots. Harvest at 6–7" or pull smaller for baby carrots. Consistent and kid‑approved.

Plant seeds directly in the garden in early spring, about 2–4 weeks before your average last frost or as soon as the soil can be worked. Optimum soil temperature for germination is 55–65°F. Thin seedlings when about 1” high. Sow every 2–3 weeks for a steady harvest. Avoid planting so roots mature in summer heat. Sow again in late summer for a fall harvest. Keep soil evenly moist during germination, and trim tops before storage. Loose, stone-free soil helps roots grow long, straight, and smooth. Carrots grow best in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil.
