Clemson Spineless, a 1939 AAS winner, is still the okra standard—tall, heat‑loving plants with tender, nearly spine‑free pods best picked at 3–4 inches. Slice for gumbo, grill whole, or quick‑pickle. Rich in fiber and mucilage, okra thickens stews naturally and supports digestion. Sow once soil is hot, and harvest daily to keep pods young. Hibiscus‑like blooms feed pollinators; pods feed everyone else. A true Southern workhorse that grows happily anywhere with summer heat.

Plant seed directly in the garden about 2–3 weeks after your average last frost date, once soil has warmed to at least 65°F. Optimum soil temperature for germination is 65–85°F. Thin seedlings when plants are 3–4” high. Okra grows best in full sun and warm weather, and seeds planted in cool soil may germinate slowly or rot. Harvest pods young and tender, usually 2–4” long, and pick every 2–3 days to keep plants producing. Remove overmature pods promptly to encourage continued flowering. Scarifying or soaking seed before planting may improve germination.
