Jet Black Barley produces striking purple-black hulled grains long valued for malting, roasting, and hearty porridges. Fast growing and well suited to cool weather, it also serves as an excellent cover crop—building biomass, helping reduce erosion, and shading out weeds. Sow in early spring or fall, then harvest grain when heads are dry and shatter easily, or cut earlier for cover crop use before seed set. Barley offers soluble fiber, including beta-glucans associated with heart health. Grow it for home brewing experiments, soil-building cover, or a beautiful and useful stand of grain.

Direct sow barley in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked, or in fall where winter barley is suited. Barley grows best in cool weather and tolerates light frosts. Sow into a well-prepared, well-drained seedbed and keep soil evenly moist during germination and early growth. Plant in full sun for best growth. Barley establishes quickly and helps reduce erosion, hold weeds down, and build biomass. For grain use, harvest once heads are fully mature and dry. For cover crop use, mow or cut before seed set if you do not want it to reseed.
