Red Corn poppy (Papaver rhoeas) paints fields in Europe each spring and has long symbolized remembrance. In the garden it offers satiny scarlet petals with a dark cross at the center, each bloom fleeting but quickly replaced. After flowering, slender pods dry beautifully for crafts or seed saving. Traditionally used in mild teas and syrups, the species today is grown for color and pollinators, not medicine. Direct sow in cool soil; poppies dislike transplanting. If you want a simple, low‑care splash of scarlet that also feeds bees, this is it.

Plant seeds directly in the garden in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked, or 4–6 weeks before your average last frost date. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is about 60°F. Starting transplants is not recommended, as poppies are sensitive to root disturbance. Sow seed shallowly and thin seedlings when 1–2” tall. Poppies germinate best in cool soil and tolerate light frost. They are excellent for mass plantings and may self-sow if allowed to go to seed.
