Spearmint offers a bright, sweet mint flavor that shines in herbal tea, iced tea, mojitos, tzatziki, lamb, and fruit salads. Upright, spear-leafed stems are vigorous and spreading, so it’s best grown in containers or a dedicated bed to keep it in bounds.

Summer flower spikes feed bees and other beneficial insects. Snip young tips for the most tender leaves; they dry well and keep their flavor nicely for tea and everyday kitchen use. Long treasured as a calming tea herb and simple breath freshener, spearmint rewards regular cutting with lush, branching growth from spring through frost.

Start seed indoors 6-8 weeks before transplanting into the garden. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 55-65°. Transplant to individual containers at first true leaves; move to the garden after frost danger, when plants are 3–4" tall. Or, plant seeds directly in the garden after your average last frost date. Pinch tops early for bushier growth. Spreads quickly and may become invasive—grow in containers to contain. Cut back to ground before winter for stronger regrowth the following year.
