Amish Melon, also called Pennsylvania Dutch melon, bears heavily ribbed, softly netted fruits with sweet, ivory to pale orange flesh and a floral aroma. Handed down through Amish communities, it’s prized for dependable yields and flavor in short to medium seasons. Melons like heat, steady moisture, and fertile, well-drained soil—mulch to hold water and reduce rot. Rich in vitamins A and C, this is a true breakfast melon. Harvest when the rind turns slightly golden and the stem begins to slip. If you value old varieties that earned their keep over generations, this one belongs on your trellis or in your patch.

How to Grow

Direct seed 2 to 3 weeks after average last frost and when daytime soil temperatures are near 70°f. Or, start melon seed indoors 3-4 weeks before your anticipated planting date. Set transplants in the garden 2 to 3 weeks after danger of frost has passed. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 65-85 degrees. A few weeks before transplanting time, harden off plants by exposing them to an increasing number of hours outdoors each day. Delay transplanting until your soil has thoroughly warmed up in the spring.
