Tall, branching plants throw purple flower spikes that bees mob, so pinch often for more leaves and less bloom. Basil loves heat, drainage, and steady moisture; stress turns it bitter. Harvest in the morning for peak oils, use fresh for brightest flavor, and dry extra for winter chai blends or potpourri.

Plant seeds directly into the garden starting 1-2 weeks after average last frost date, when air temperature is above 65°f. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 65-80°f.
