Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta) is a North American native that carries golden petals around dark centers from midsummer to frost. Tough, drought tolerant, and beloved by pollinators, it also makes a sturdy cut flower. Indigenous peoples used related species for teas and poultices; today gardeners value rudbeckia for resilience and late-season color. Direct sow or transplant starts, deadhead to extend bloom, and let a few seed for birds and next year’s volunteers. It’s a backbone plant that rarely asks for more than sun.

Plant seeds directly into the garden in spring after danger of frost has passed, or start seed indoors 5–8 weeks before transplanting into the garden. Optimum soil temperature for germination is 68–75°F. Surface sow or cover seed very lightly, as light aids germination. Transplant to the garden after your average last frost date. Prefers full sun and well-drained soil, but tolerates partial shade. Rudbeckia may self-sow readily. Flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects.
