Cosmic Purple shows off a deep violet skin with a bright orange core—color derived from anthocyanins as well as beta‑carotene. That means sweet crunch plus antioxidant heft. Bred by USDA breeder John Navazio in the 2000s, it roots well in loose soil and holds color when roasted. Sow in succession for a steady supply, keep beds moist for the long germination window, and thin early. Slice raw to wow the kids or roast to concentrate the sweetness. This is a carrot with attitude and nutrition in equal measure.

How to Grow

Plant seeds directly in the garden in early spring, about 2–4 weeks before your average last frost or as soon as the soil can be worked. Optimum soil temperature for germination is 45–85°F, with best germination around 55–65°F. Thin seedlings when about 1” high. Sow every 2–3 weeks for a steady harvest. Avoid planting so roots mature in summer heat, which reduces quality. Sow again in late summer for a fall harvest. Keep soil evenly moist during germination, and trim tops to about 1” before storage.
