De Cicco is an 1890s Italian sprouting, multi-cut broccoli—an early type that makes a modest central head, then weeks of tender side shoots (not the overwintering purple kind). Compact and dependable, it suits small beds and steady, pick-as-you-need harvests. Stems and leaves cook up as well as the florets—sweet, mild brassica flavor for quick sautés, sheet-pan roasts, pastas, and omelets. It matures fast, handles spring and fall plantings, and tolerates a bit of heat better than many. Snip the first head promptly to cue even more shoots. Naturally rich in vitamins A, C, and K, De Cicco trades one big crown for a long run of useful food—real garden utility in a tidy footprint.
Start seed indoors 5–7 weeks before your anticipated planting date. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 70–85°F. Harden off plants about 1 week before transplanting. Set transplants in the garden 2–4 weeks before your average last spring frost. Direct seeding is best suited to areas with a long, cool spring or for fall crops. For a fall harvest, set transplants about 6–8 weeks before your average first frost, or direct sow about 85–100 days before first frost. De Cicco produces a central head followed by many smaller side shoots, so regular cutting encourages continued harvest.
