Early Prolific Straightneck has been a kitchen favorite since the 1930s—smooth, lemon-yellow squash with a true straight neck, creamy, slightly nutty flesh, and a small seed cavity. Harvest at 4–6” for peak tenderness: slices brown beautifully in a hot pan, hold their shape on the grill, and tuck into casseroles without turning watery. Shave into ribbons for salads, sauté with corn and peppers, or quick-pickle coins for the fridge. The blossoms fry up delicate and sweet. Naturally hydrating and a source of potassium and vitamin C, this is the dependable yellow squash that actually tastes like summer.

Plant seeds directly in the garden in spring after danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. Summer squash grows best in a warm site with full sun. Sow in hills or rows, thinning to the strongest plants after emergence. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 70–90°F. Or, start seed indoors about 3 weeks before transplanting. Transplant carefully after danger of frost has passed, as squash dislikes root disturbance. Warm soil is essential for good germination and early growth. Using transplants can speed harvest.
