🚚 FREE SHIPPING for all orders over $79!
Waltham 29, developed in Massachusetts in the 1950s, earns its keep with stout plants, tight domed central heads, and a steady flush of side shoots for weeks of picking. Flavor leans nutty-sweet—especially after a light frost—and you’re packing in vitamins C and K plus glucosinolates with every bowl. Start early for summer harvests or sow for fall to let the cold sweeten it; transplant into rich, well-drained soil and keep moisture even. Reliable, productive, tasty—this is the backyard standard for a reason.
Start broccoli seed indoors 5–7 weeks before your anticipated planting date. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 70–85°F. Harden off plants for about 1 week before transplanting. Set transplants in the garden 2–4 weeks before your average last spring frost. Direct seeding is best suited to areas with a long, cool spring or for fall crops. For a fall harvest, set transplants about 6–8 weeks before your average first frost, or direct sow about 85–100 days before first frost. Broccoli grows best in cool weather and fertile, well-drained soil with steady moisture. Harvest heads while buds are tight and firm, before flowers begin to open.

I had a hard to getting these to produce the first year I grew them. It was a matter of when and how I sowed the seeds. Last year, they came out beautifully and lush! Delicious produce.
