Luffa gourds dry into natural sponges—scrubbers you grew yourself. Harvest young for edible, tender fruits (common in Asian cuisine) or let them mature, peel, and shake out seeds to reveal the fibrous core. Vines love heat and need a sturdy trellis. Start seeds warm, give full sun, and be patient; sponges come late. Sustainable scrubbing and a fun garden science project in one vine.

Start seed indoors 4-6 weeks before transplanting into the garden. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 65-85 degrees. Transplant to the garden 2 to 3 weeks after your average last frost. Or, plant seeds directly in the garden 2-3 weeks after average last frost date. Warm soil is essential to good seed germination and emergence. Gourds grow best in a warmer climates with full sun. Using transplants can speed production. Trellising is suitable but not required. Harvest when
the skin has turned brown and starts to separate from fiber
inside.
