‘Rhubarb’ chard flashes crimson stems under deep green leaves—ornamental enough for flower beds, edible enough to anchor the skillet. Flavor is earthy-sweet; stems sauté like celery, leaves cook like spinach. High in vitamins A and K. Sow spring through fall, cut outer leaves, and it keeps producing. A splash of red that feeds you for months.

Plant seeds directly into the garden starting 2-3 weeks before average last frost date when soil temperature is at least 50°f. Successive plantings can be made throughout the summer. You can also start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before transplanting. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 65-85 degrees. A spring planting can last all season long if well cared for. Chard can be planted again in late summer about 6-8 weeks before average first frost date.
