Sweet Lorane is a small‑seeded, tender‑skinned fava that’s easier to eat fresh without peeling—perfect for quick sautés and salads. Pods are loaded, plants fix nitrogen, and cool weather suits them fine. Sow very early spring or fall, stake if windy, and harvest young for the sweetest beans. High in protein and fiber, favas are a soil builder and a meal in one. This variety proves favas don’t have to be a chore to prep.

Plant seeds directly in the garden starting 3-5 weeks before average last frost date or as soon as the soil can be worked. Favas can be planted usually at the same time as peas. In climates where winters remain above 10°f, can also be planted late-summer to early-fall. Pinching back the upper part of the plant as the initial pods emerge typically results in beans of higher quality that are more consistently uniform. For dried beans, harvest a few weeks after normal picking
time when the pods are thick, well-filled and dry. Can also be used for cover cropping.
