Whipple Bush Bean is an heirloom string bean noted for rich, “beany” flavor and high yields on compact plants. Pods are tender when picked young and perfect for canning or quick sautés. Beans add protein to the diet and nitrogen to the soil. Direct sow after frost, keep picked to maintain production. A practical, tasty bean that earns pantry space.

Start seed outdoors after danger of frost has passed, usually 1-2 weeks after average last frost date. Inoculating seeds w/ nitrogen fixing-bacteria may increase yields in areas newly planted in beans. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 65-85 degrees. Wait until air & soil has warmed up in the spring. Seeds planted in cold soil can germinate slowly and rot. For dried beans, harvest a few weeks after normal picking time when the pods are thick, well-filled and dry. For shelled beans, pick individual pods when the green beans inside are plump.
