Whipple bush bean is a dual-purpose heirloom: pick pods young for crisp, stringless snaps, or let them dry down for big, maroon-mottled dry beans with a creamy, rich flavor—excellent for chili, soups, and winter stews. Compact plants set heavily; keep them picked for snaps, or allow pods to mature and rattle on the vine, then pull plants to finish drying under cover. As a legume, Whipple quietly fixes nitrogen and leaves the bed better than it found it. Direct sow after frost and mulch to hold moisture. Expect snaps in roughly 60 days and dry beans in about 90–100 days, depending on season.

Start seed outdoors after danger of frost has passed, usually 1-2 weeks after average last frost date. Inoculating seeds w/ nitrogen fixing-bacteria may increase yields in areas newly planted in beans. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 65-85 degrees. Wait until air & soil has warmed up in the spring. Seeds planted in cold soil can germinate slowly and rot. For dried beans, harvest a few weeks after normal picking time when the pods are thick, well-filled and dry. For shelled beans, pick individual pods when the green beans inside are plump.
