Charentais is the French market standard: small, round melons with smooth gray-green rinds and deep salmon flesh that tastes like distilled summer. Picked at peak, they’re almost too fragrant to store—eat them fast or share. Developed in the 1920s in western France, Charentais melons are rich in vitamins A and C and beloved for sorbets, salads, and wrapped in cured meats. Grow in warm, fertile soil, prune to two fruits per vine for best size, and harvest at strong perfume and slight slip. If you want restaurant-level flavor from your backyard, Charentais is the chef’s pick.

Direct seed 2 to 3 weeks after average last frost and when daytime soil temperatures are near 70°f. Or, start melon seed indoors 3-4 weeks before your anticipated planting date. Set transplants in the garden 2 to 3 weeks after danger of frost has passed. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 65-85 degrees. A few weeks before transplanting time, harden off plants by exposing them to an increasing number of hours outdoors each day. Delay transplanting until your soil has thoroughly warmed up in the spring.
