Choosing Seeds for Your First Garden

A first garden does not need to be large or complicated. Begin with varieties suited to your sunlight, growing space, and season. Crops that germinate readily, grow vigorously, or produce over a long period make it easier to see progress and learn as you go.

Include a few quick crops such as radishes, lettuce, or carrots, a few productive summer vegetables such as bush beans, corn, or summer squash, one or two useful herbs, and a couple of easy flowers. Direct-sown varieties can also simplify the process by removing the need for indoor seed starting.

Start with six to ten varieties rather than planting everything at once. That is enough to create a useful mix while keeping watering, weeding, and harvesting manageable. As confidence grows, the garden can grow with it—one bed, one container, and one season at a time.

Beginner Garden Questions

Radishes, lettuce, beans, carrots, corn, summer squash, sunflowers, zinnias, and many herbs and flowers can be direct sown when soil and weather conditions are suitable. Direct sowing removes the extra step of caring for seedlings indoors.

A first garden of six to ten varieties provides plenty to harvest while keeping planting, watering, and weeding manageable. Include a few quick crops, one or two longer-season vegetables, a useful herb, and flowers for color and pollinators.

A first garden can fit in a few containers, one raised bed, or a small in-ground plot. Start with the space you can water and maintain consistently rather than planting more than you can comfortably tend.
