Crested Mix celosia forms bold, brainy combs in reds, oranges, and golds that hold their shape and color whether fresh or dried. A tropical annual from Africa and Asia, celosia’s young leaves are eaten as “soko” in parts of West Africa, though these forms are mainly ornamental. Heat and humidity barely slow it down. Cut the crests for dried wreaths or leave them to feed bees at the open florets. If you need durable, sculptural color when the heat sets in, crested celosia does it better than most.

How to Grow

Start seed indoors 6-8 weeks before transplanting into the garden. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 65-75
°F
. Cover soil very lightly as seeds require light to germinate. Harden off and transplant to the garden 1-2 weeks after your average last frost date. Prefers well-drained, fertile soil high in organic matter. Or, plant seeds directly in the garden after average last frost date for locations with a long growing season. Excellent for both fresh and dried cut flowers.
