Red Peony poppy produces fully double, velvet‑red blooms that resemble old cottage peonies, followed by large, decorative seed pods. Long grown across Eastern Europe and Central Asia, this breadseed type offers both ornamental punch and a useful dried pod. Direct sow early, give it sun and a little space, and it will paint a patch of intense color before setting sculptural seed heads you can save or dry for winter arrangements.

Plant seeds directly in the garden as soon as the soil can be worked, or 2-4 weeks before your average last frost date. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 60-75°f. Starting transplants is not recommended. Poppies are very susceptible to transplant shock. Poppies germinate best in cool soil and are frost tolerant. When seedlings are 2" tall, thin to 1 plant every 6-10".
