Minnesota Midget cantaloupe was bred in the 1940s for northern gardens—vines stay compact and fruits ripen early at just 4–6 inches across. The orange flesh is sweet and aromatic, perfect for two people or one big breakfast. Melons offer beta-carotene and vitamin C without the sugar wallop of some desserts. Train on a small trellis to save space; support fruit with slings. Harvest at full slip (stem releases easily) and eat soon after. For short seasons, patios, or succession planting, Minnesota Midget is a reliable, small-space melon that proves you don’t need acreage for real flavor.

Direct seed 2 to 3 weeks after average last frost and when daytime soil temperatures are near 70°f. Or, start melon seed indoors 3-4 weeks before your anticipated planting date. Set transplants in the garden 2 to 3 weeks after danger of frost has passed. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 65-85 degrees. A few weeks before transplanting time, harden off plants by exposing them to an increasing number of hours outdoors each day. Delay transplanting until your soil has thoroughly warmed up in the spring.
