Grandpa Ott morning glory is a beloved heirloom from the Bavarian family of Grandpa Ott, brought to the U.S. by Seeds Savers Exchange. Deep purple trumpets with a magenta throat cloak vigorous vines that can reach 10 feet. Morning glories prefer warm soil and a sturdy trellis; nick or soak seeds to speed sprouting. Seeds are toxic if eaten, so enjoy the show, not the snack. For fences that need quick cover or arches that need drama by breakfast time, Grandpa Ott delivers daily surprise blooms.

Plant seeds directly in the garden as soon as the soil can be worked, roughly a few weeks prior to average last frost date. Soaking seeds overnight in water can improve germination as morning glories have tough seed coats. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 60-75°f. Or, start seed indoors 4-8 weeks before transplanting into the garden. Harden off for 1 week prior to planting outside. Transplant to the garden 1-2 weeks after your average last frost. Plants are sensitive to transplant shock, so take care when transplanting.
