Jenny Lind is a mid-1800s turban-shaped cantaloupe named for the Swedish soprano who charmed America. Small, single-serving fruits ripen early, with pale green, perfumed flesh and a distinct buttoned blossom end. Perfect for short seasons or small gardens, vines are modest and fruits tuck easily into the fridge. Melons bring vitamins A and C along with electrolytes—an old-fashioned tonic in modern heat. Grow on a fence to save space, support developing fruit, and harvest when the rind softens and aroma intensifies. If you like antiques with personality and true flavor, Jenny Lind is a little melon with a big story.

Direct seed 2 to 3 weeks after average last frost and when daytime soil temperatures are near 70°f. Or, start melon seed indoors 3-4 weeks before your anticipated planting date. Set transplants in the garden 2 to 3 weeks after danger of frost has passed. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 65-85 degrees. A few weeks before transplanting time, harden off plants by exposing them to an increasing number of hours outdoors each day. Delay transplanting until your soil has thoroughly warmed up in the spring.
