Lemon Mint bee balm (Monarda citriodora) releases a citrus‑mint scent when brushed and sends up stacked whorls of lavender flowers that hummingbirds and bees can’t resist. Native to the southern U.S., it thrives in heat and lean soil, reseeding lightly if you let seed heads stand. Traditionally brewed as a calming, antimicrobial tea, it’s also a striking cut flower. Give it sun, moderate water, and space for air flow to avoid mildew. If you want fragrance plus pollinator traffic in a compact annual, Lemon Mint delivers both without demanding rich soil or constant fuss.

Start seed indoors 6-8 weeks before transplanting into the garden. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 65-70°. Transplant to the garden after your average last frost date. Or, plant seeds directly in the garden from early spring to mid-summer. Sow thickly, thinning to 1 plant every 12-18". This wildflower is native to north america attracting a host of beneficial bees, butterflies and birds. Can be used for a variety of medicinal benefits. Cutting back after flowering encourages additional blooms.
