Mary Washington has anchored American asparagus beds since 1919—thick, tender spears with classic flavor and excellent disease resistance. Asparagus is a long-term crop; start from seed or crowns, weed well the first year, and harvest lightly in year two. Loaded with folate and vitamin K, it’s a spring tonic vegetable. Let ferns grow tall to feed crowns, and you’ll cut spears for a decade or more.

Start seed indoors 10-14 weeks before last spring frost date. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 65-75 degrees. Seeds may take 6-8 weeks to germinate. Set transplants into trenches 5-8" deep in early spring after the danger of frost has passed. When starting from seed, 2-3 years may be required before asparagus can be harvested. Plants harvested too heavily to early can become weak and spindly.

Amazingly Easy to Grow!

This was the first time ever trying asparagus seeds. The packet said they would take 10 days to sprout, but they were up and happy in under a week. I can't wait to see how they do outside!
