Striped Armenian “cucumber” is actually a melon (Cucumis melo) that never goes bitter, staying crisp and subtly sweet even in heat. Long, ribbed, and pale green, it curls into baskets if trellised or sprawls on the ground. Originating in the Middle East, it thrives in hot, dry conditions and light soils. Slice into salads or quick pickles; the texture holds. Provide a trellis for straighter fruits, steady moisture for best crunch, and harvest young. If cucumbers fail you in July, this one won’t.

Plant seeds directly in the garden in the spring after the danger of frost has passed, roughly 1-2 weeks after the average last frost date and when daytime temps are near 70°f. Sow 5-6 seeds per hill and thin to 2-3 plants. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 65-80 degrees. For transplants, start seed indoors 3-4 weeks before transplanting into the garden. Transplant to the garden 2-3 weeks after your average last frost date
