Sugar Baby is the patio watermelon: 8–12 pound fruits with dark green rinds and dense, sweet red flesh that chills quickly and fits in the fridge. Released in 1959, it’s an enduring favorite for short seasons and small spaces. Watermelons hydrate and provide lycopene; this one makes that easy in a raised bed or along a fence. Vines are shorter, but still need room and sun. Harvest when the ground spot yellows and the tendril dries down. Slice, seed-spit, repeat—Sugar Baby is summer distilled into a manageable package.

How to Grow

Direct sow after danger of frost has passed, once soil has warmed to at least 65–70°F. Or, start seed indoors 3–4 weeks before planting out. Optimum soil temperature for germination is 70–90°F. Transplant carefully after danger of frost has passed and the soil is thoroughly warm, as watermelon seedlings are tender and dislike root disturbance. Watermelons grow best in full sun and warm, fertile soil with even moisture. Black plastic mulch and row covers can help warm the soil, speed early growth, and improve harvest timing.
