Whipple - Bush Bean Seeds
The Whipple dry bush bean exhibits robust growth with bushy plants and short runners, producing abundant clusters of 6-8" pods that bear plump beans in a purplish-red hue adorned with small white spots. These substantial heirloom beans boast a rich flavor profile, making them especially well-suited for slow-cooked chili. The variety is named in honor of the Whipple family, who cultivated it and settled in Oregon's Willamette Valley during the mid-19th century. Mr. Whipple, a minister, played a role in the civil rights movement, participating in marches and collaborating with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 20g ~ 30 seeds.
GROWING TIPS
Start seed outdoors after danger of frost has passed, usually 1-2 weeks after average last frost date. Inoculating seeds w/ nitrogen fixing-bacteria may increase yields in areas newly planted in beans. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 65-85 degrees. Wait until air & soil has warmed up in the spring. Seeds planted in cold soil can germinate slowly and rot. For dried beans, harvest a few weeks after normal picking time when the pods are thick, well-filled and dry. For shelled beans, pick individual pods when the green beans inside are plump.
