California Orange poppy is the classic state flower—silky, flame-orange cups that open with sun and close in cloud or dusk. Native to the western U.S., it thrives in dry, lean soils where fussier flowers fail, making it perfect for banks, meadows, and xeric beds. Indigenous peoples used parts of the plant as gentle sedatives and topical washes; modern gardeners value its drought tolerance and long bloom. Scatter seed in fall or very early spring, thin lightly, and let a few self‑sow. The result is months of color for almost no effort.

Plant seeds directly in the garden as soon as the soil can be worked, or 2-4 weeks before your average last frost date. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 60-75°f. Starting transplants is not recommended. Poppies are very susceptible to transplant shock. Poppies germinate best in cool soil and are frost tolerant. When seedlings are 2" tall, thin to 1 plant every 6-10".
