Iceland Poppy (Papaver nudicaule) adds early-season color with crinkled, papery blooms in soft shades of apricot, lemon, and white. Slender stems hold the flowers above tidy foliage, creating a clean, airy look. In cooler climates, it blooms for weeks; in warmer areas, it shines in early spring before fading with the heat. Direct sowing is best, as it resents transplanting. A great choice for garden edges, cutting beds, or naturalized spaces where you want simple, elegant color early in the season.
Plant seeds directly in the garden as soon as the soil can be worked, or 2-4 weeks before your average last frost date, or late autumn. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 60-75°f.
Or, start seed indoors 6-8 weeks before transplanting into the garden. Harden off and transplant to the garden after danger of frost has passed.
When seedlings are 2" tall, thin to 1 plant every 6-10". Iceland poppies
Prefer cool conditions and may not do well in hot summer weather.
