Delicious 51 was bred at Utah State University for cool nights and sweet flesh—orange, aromatic, and (true to name) delicious. Fruits are small to mid-sized with heavy netting and firm texture that holds in fruit salads. High in vitamin A, cantaloupes make breakfast better and desserts lighter. Start indoors or direct sow after danger of frost; mulch and water evenly. Harvest at slip and chill before serving. Reliable, flavorful, and early—Delicious 51 is a practical cantaloupe that doesn’t sacrifice taste for earliness.

Direct sow cantaloupe seed 2 to 3 weeks after average last frost and when daytime soil temperatures are near 70°f. Sow 3-5 seeds per hill. Or, start melon seed indoors 3-4 weeks before your anticipated planting date. Set transplants in the garden 2 to 3 weeks after danger of frost has passed. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 65-85 degrees. A week or so before transplanting time, harden off plants by exposing them to an increasing number of hours outdoors each day. Delay transplanting until your soil has thoroughly warmed up in the spring.
